The University of Nottingham is offering a research studentship as part of the Biochar Demonstrator project, a £31.5M programme aimed at helping the UK meet its net zero climate target by 2050. The project focuses on addressing uncertainties surrounding the deployment of biochar in the UK, with a comprehensive demonstration programme involving arable, grassland, and woodland ecosystems.
As a research assistant, you will contribute to the development of an analytical pyrolysis technique, hydropyrolysis (HyPy), which measures the fraction of stable polycyclic aromatic carbon (SPAC) in biochar. You will also assist in characterizing the labile carbon fraction using mass spectrometry and apply this approach to representative archaeological charcoal samples.
The project involves collaboration with the radiocarbon facility at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) and will provide training opportunities in greenhouse gas removal and the broader societal, economic, and technical aspects of biochar deployment.
To be eligible, applicants should hold a first or upper second-class honours degree in chemical, environmental, or geological sciences and be eligible for paying home fees.
The studentship will provide a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in biochar and carbon sequestration, with the potential to make a significant impact on the UK's climate change mitigation efforts.
