The role of a Radiation Protection Specialist at UKAEA is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the safe management of ionising radiation in various applications. This position requires a deep understanding of radiation protection principles and regulations, including the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17), Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR16), COSHH, and other related legislation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • To provide advice and guidance to personnel on observance with radiation protection regulations and company policies.
  • To work closely with Health Physicists (HP)/Radiological Protection Advisers (RPA) to ensure consistency in advice and guidance.
  • To conduct regular calibration of equipment for monitoring levels of ionising radiation and verify its serviceability and correct usage.
  • To participate in the periodic examination and testing of engineering controls, design features, safety features, and warning devices to restrict exposure to ionising radiation.
  • To assist in the risk assessment required by regulation 8 and the designation of controlled and supervised areas as per regulation 17.

This role involves a range of activities, including investigations, contingency planning, dose assessments, and recording, all aligned with regulatory requirements.

Requirements:
  • A degree in Science or a related discipline, or equivalent qualification.
  • A keen interest in learning about radiation protection and a willingness to develop expertise in this area.
  • Effective communication skills to engage with diverse groups of personnel.
