Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the In-reach Clinic, working closely with senior Neonatal Discharge Planners and community services to actively reduce length of stay. They will also work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team and senior discharge planners to determine the best place for continuing care of each baby, whether this is staying on the unit, transfer to their local hospital, home or paediatric ward.

The Neonatal Sister will work closely with the Senior Nurses and senior Discharge Planners to manage patient flow from admission through to discharge, maintaining high quality patient care and efficient use of resources. They will also be responsible for overseeing and managing the Neonatal Unit in-reach clinic, being aware of transfers out of King's College Hospital neonatal unit and liaising with other units in transferring babies back to local hospitals.

The ideal candidate will be aware of individual family dynamics, social and cultural diversity, and will be aware of the Trust's safeguarding policies and procedures. They will demonstrate the ability to effectively raise concerns and work closely with the Trust's safeguarding team and other agencies to protect children. They will also take an active role in the unit's safeguarding meetings.

The Neonatal Sister will actively support the implementation of the Trust and Child Health nursing strategy, upholding the ethos of the local philosophy. They will take an active role in the parent satisfaction survey, ensuring all parents have access to reporting their stay and writing action plans to improve the care provided on the neonatal unit. They will also be flexible in their work schedule to provide cross cover where and when needed.

The successful candidate will be responsible for liaising with Transitional care on the postnatal ward and facilitating training of Neonatal Unit staff allocated to work there. They will act as a positive role model to junior staff members, ensuring the management of the special care area is maintained at all times by direct and indirect supervision of the sister-in-charge of the area. They will also act as a team leader to an identified group of staff, monitoring and documenting the development of their clinical skills.

The Neonatal Sister will carry the Unit bleep as required, resolving local problems/ conflicts, keeping managers/others informed and maintaining positive team dynamics in the unit at all times. They will ensure compliance with the Trust's Equality and Diversity Policy, supporting the delivery of the Trust's Race Equality Scheme and the Trust's duty to positively promote race equality and equality of opportunity for disabled people, ensuring services are responsive to the needs of equality groups.

The ideal candidate will be a mentor to junior staff members, responsible for the orientation, supervision and ongoing development of junior and student nurses and midwives, in conjunction with Line Manager and Practice Development staff. They will participate in any research projects conducted in the clinical area as appropriate, assist in the development of policies and protocols within the clinical area and support the continuous quality improvement by audit and surveys and implement changes in the light of findings.

The Neonatal Sister will ensure that practice is evidence based and that clinical guideline standards and policies are implemented, and will be actively involved in auditing practice in conjunction with the senior nursing team. They will act as a clinical resource within the Unit and across the Care Group as necessary, working within and accepting responsibility for maintaining agreed levels of clinical competence and ensuring clinical currency as new technologies are introduced.

The successful candidate will ensure own development and continue clinical competency by working a clinical shift in the intensive care or High dependency areas on a regular basis as required by the Modern Matron. They will keep up to date with NMC, Trust and Care Group policies and guidelines and will adhere to these at all times. They will demonstrate an insight into own professional development, contributing to the process of identifying own educational and clinical training needs in conjunction with the team leader.

The Neonatal Sister will participate in own Individual Performance Review and after suitable training, will be responsible for undertaking timely reviews for own team of junior staff. They will ensure own educational commitment is sufficient to maintain Revalidation requirements and will ensure own mandatory training certificates are current, in liaison with Line Manager. They will also have experience in discharge planning and/or community working, and will demonstrate a demonstrable interest in and commitment to the professional development of others.
