About the Role

This is a senior leadership position that requires a high level of expertise in science and technology, as well as strong strategic thinking and communication skills. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the national security landscape and be able to provide advice to senior officials and Ministers.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Develop and implement science and technology strategies to support national security objectives
  2. Foster collaboration between academia, industry, and government to access and influence the best thinking and innovation
  3. Provide strategic advice to senior officials and Ministers on science and technology matters
  4. Lead the development of the Science, Technology, and Engineering Programme (STEP) and oversee its implementation
  5. Engage with international partners to identify opportunities and build collaboration on science and technology developments
  6. Represent GCHQ in various HMG fora and provide linkage to world-leading research groups, academia, and industry

Requirements

  • Credibility as a scientist, engineer, or technologist with a reputation for thought leadership and an evidence-driven approach
  • Senior leadership experience with a track record of providing inspiring leadership and driving delivery across disparate teams and partners
  • Experience of collaborating with international partners on science and technology matters
  • Ability to operate effectively in a complex stakeholder environment with strong collaboration and strategic influencing skills
  • Excellence in communication with the ability to connect across science, mission, and policy communities
  • Commitment to personal development, growing capability in others, and promoting diversity and inclusion

Terms of Appointment

  • A fixed term appointment of three years with the potential to be extended up to five years
  • Nationality and Security Clearance: Agency Developed Vetting will be required with limitations on travel and other personal activities, as well as a lifelong duty of confidentiality

Salary and Benefits

The salary for this role is £156,163 per annum, with additional benefits including 30 days annual leave, public holidays, and a range of perks such as interest-free season ticket loan, excellent pension scheme, cycle to work scheme, and paid parental leave.
