About the Role

The Christie NHS FT is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Ward Manager to lead our Oncology Critical Care Unit. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional patient care and ensuring the delivery of high-quality services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide management support for staff and act as a preceptor to designated staff.
  • Lead patient services, reviewing and implementing changes to support ongoing improvements in clinical practice.
  • Liaise with the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal bed usage.
  • Collaborate with medical staff to ensure realistic and efficient bed usage.
  • Assess, plan, and implement clinical care, maintaining associated patient records.
  • Organize daily work schedules and off-duty rotas, ensuring appropriate skill mix and deployment of staff for patient needs.
  • Assist in maintaining the staff and non-staff budget within agreed limits.
  • Collaborate with other service providers to ensure high standards of cleanliness and nutrition.
  • Be aware of Health and Safety issues and ensure relevant risk assessments are undertaken.
  • Report and record accidents and complaints according to policy, investigating speedily and compassionately.
  • Ensure all trust policies and procedures are adhered to and new ones implemented as necessary.
  • Ensure team members adhere to the uniform policy and maintain a professional image.
  • Report to the Lead Nurse on patient affairs and staff development.
  • Support senior staff in appraisals and ensure staff participate in personal development plans.
  • Assist in the recruitment process and take a progressive approach to managing sickness and absence.
  • Take appropriate action in relation to disciplinary matters and follow procedures as laid down by the Trust.
  • Supervise the requisition of stocks and equipment with care and economy.
  • Act up as required.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Assess critically unwell patients, initiate treatment, and monitor effects based on evidence-based practice.
  • Liaise with the OCCU Consultant and patient team with patients causing concern.
  • Provide advice on airway management, oxygen therapy, and cardiovascular support in acute deterioration.
  • Assess and interpret complex patient conditions using relevant blood results and investigations.
  • Provide emotional support for patients and their relatives.
  • Use a concise documentation framework when recording monitoring and treatment plans.
  • Identify clinical risks and work with senior nurses to devise strategies for safe and effective care.
  • Work with staff to ensure smooth and safe transfer of patients from wards/theatre to the OCCU environment.
  • Ensure clinical policies and guidelines are updated in response to clinical evidence.
  • Ensure relevant National Guidelines are adopted.
  • Investigate patient journeys in response to adverse events or incidents.
  • Take responsibility for personal clinical development.

Training and Education

  • Be up to date in education and training in specialized Critical Care, including annual updates and competent in all areas of clinical practice.
  • Ensure all staff have an appropriate level of training and are offered relevant support.
  • Present at training days and conferences.
  • Initiate and undertake research and audit to influence practice.
  • Be up to date and competent with other clinical skills, such as Intermediate Life Support and Advanced Life Support.
  • Attend all mandatory study days and ensure staff attendance.
  • Work with the Practice Educator for Critical Care to deliver education and training.

Professional

  • Have expert knowledge and advise nursing staff on emergency admissions and associated issues.
  • Liaise closely with the medical team and other MDT members to promote high standards of care.
  • Participate in the on-call rota for hospital cover out of hours.
  • Represent the unit at the Band 7 forum.
  • Highlight areas for improvement and undertake relevant projects.
  • Keep abreast of issues influencing the Trust and ensure senior colleagues and the team are aware.
  • Participate in policy writing for the unit and Trust.
  • Be fully aware of the divisional objectives and the Trust's corporate plan.

Personal

  • Demonstrate a pleasant and approachable manner, creating a good working relationship.
