Venture Science Doctorate: A 3-Year Odyssey

The Venture Science Doctorate (VSD) is a groundbreaking, fully-funded PhD program that empowers candidates to tackle global challenges in health, climate, agriculture, and computation. As part of the Deep Science Ventures College at Woolf University, you'll join a globally recognized institution dedicated to widening access to higher education.

This 3-year venture creation focused PhD program will take you on an immersive journey, where you'll learn to design research projects from first principles, develop innovative solutions, and create new companies founded by candidates based on this research.

Backed by a philanthropic consortium of mission-aligned partners, including Schmidt Futures, Innovate UK, SPRIND, and Anglo American, the VSD is embedded in a global R&D coalition of universities and national labs. You'll collaborate with renowned institutions such as National Physical Laboratory, the James Hutton Institute, Imperial College, Max Planck, the University of Edinburgh, University College London, Goldsmiths, University of London, Cornell University, the Mayo Clinic, and many others.

**Year 1: Scoping and Landscape Mapping**

In this foundational year, you'll familiarize yourself with a given industry, mapping the landscape, and identifying areas of opportunity for high-impact venture creation. You'll employ our proprietary Scoping methodology to pinpoint optimal solutions to pressing problems and engage in lab work to develop hypotheses. Our accredited courses, such as experimental design, will provide a solid foundation for your research endeavors.

**Year 2: Invention and Validation**

Building on your initial findings, you'll delve into invention, further developing your hypotheses and working within leading research groups to prove the technology against the original hypothesis. Technoeconomic analysis will validate your discoveries, setting the stage for the next phase.

**Year 3: Venture Creation and Launch**

In the final year, you'll leverage your research from the previous two years to develop a scalable technology, capable of product market fit. If necessary, you may collaborate with multiple research groups to refine your solution. Having validated the technology, you'll work with experienced venture partners to build a complementary team and a rock-solid investment case. This will position you for successful engagement with top-tier investors and funders backing deeptech ventures.

You'll become a co-founder of your new venture, continuing to lead it after graduation, with ongoing support from DSV. With continuous guidance, you'll navigate the entrepreneurial landscape and make a lasting impact.
