About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Addiction Specialist Doctor to join our team at Humankind Charity. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will play a crucial role in delivering and maintaining excellent clinical practice in addiction services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team to develop and deliver prescribing treatment modalities for service users.
  • Prescribe cost-effectively and according to best practice, providing prescribing information and advice to pharmacists, shared care GPs, and hospital teams.
  • Support colleagues through individual clinical reviews as requested, to support discussion and the development of a safe and effective treatment plan.
  • Deliver health promotion and harm reduction interventions in a client-centered manner, including safer sex, contraception, nutrition, and healthy living.
  • Liaise with all agencies delivering services to or sharing care of clients, including sharing care with GPs for service users in shared care services.
  • Lead on complex, appropriately assigned alcohol detoxification assessments for individuals who have decompensated liver disease and tolerance to diazepam.
  • Provide prescribing information and advice to pharmacy and shared care GPs.
  • Review service users with complex physical co-morbidities, including decompensated liver disease, the older population, end-stage COPD, and end-of-life care, working with wider partnerships in outside specialist services.
  • Participate in external and internal subgroups, taking responsibility for the production or co-production of plans and reports as requested.
  • Work with service users with complex polypharmacy usage, including illicit, over-the-counter (OTC), and prescription-only medication (POM).
  • Undertake doctor-only specific clinics as needed for the service, including the oversight and prescribing for those presenting with complexity, and off-formulary prescribing.
  • Undertake the initial review, triage, and ongoing support of complex dual diagnosis/presentation, including pregnancy and young people.
  • Provide specialist advice in the management of misuse of POM opioid analgesia to primary care colleagues and wider internal clinical team.
  • Be an active member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and peer group supervision, taking part in MDT/complex case review meetings and presenting as appropriate to the regional MDT meeting as needed, following consultation with the clinical services lead.
Person Specification
  • Essential:
    • Addiction Specialist Doctor with extensive experience in addictions, with either completed training in general practice or psychiatry.
    • Experience of assessing, diagnosing, and clinically managing the needs of people using substances, to include meeting the clinical and psychosocial needs according to best practice and organisational policy.
    • Experience of carrying out general healthcare, including BBV, phlebotomy, health promotion/harm reduction interventions, advice, and information.
  • Desirable:
    • Driving licence and access to own vehicle is preferred but not essential.

  • Essential:
    • Registered with a license to practice on the GMC register.
