Job Description

Job Title: Superintendent - Offshore Glasgow - Clydebank

Key Responsibilities
  • Operational Excellence: Ensure all Company vessels / units under their control are maintained and operated in a safe and seaworthy condition with a high attention to environmental compliance in accordance with requirements/instructions issued by the client, the Company's Senior Management, flag state administrations and classification societies.
  • Efficient Operations: Ensure managed vessels are operated efficiently to required standards to minimise downtime and maintain the client's assets.
  • Ship Operations: Ensure that all ship operations, shipboard activities, the standard of maintenance, vessel appearance and fabric maintenance are to the standards required by the client and the Company.
  • Communication: Acting as principal point of contact between ship and shore-based staff.
  • Audit and Compliance: Auditing the day-to-day technical running of the vessels managed by the Company under their control.
  • Technical Advice: Providing advice to vessels staff and Company management within their area of expertise.
  • Statutory Compliance: Monitoring vessels under their control to ensure all statutory requirements concerning certification, safe manning, safety procedures, plant and machinery are complied with and ensuring appropriate records are maintained, liaising with and making appropriate notifications to classification societies, flag administrations etc as necessary.
  • Survey and Certification: Reviewing the vessel's monthly return of the SFOPS 19 – Survey Report to ensure that the vessel is reporting the correct information. Responsible for dealing with any surveys falling due as appropriate, arranging surveys, extensions etc. with due consideration of trading pattern and future voyage prospects, to ensure certificate validity is maintained.
  • Safety and Quality: Responding to the minutes from Safety Committee Meetings.
  • Operational Procedures: Liaising with ship's personnel to ensure operational procedures are carried out in a manner commensurate with the safe and efficient operation of the vessel(s).
  • Maintenance Management: The monitoring of planned maintenance systems.
  • Company Knowledge: Maintaining familiarity with all Company rules and operating manuals in order to provide advice to ship's staff and enable a leading role to be undertaken in any casualty response as required by management.
  • Logbook and Records: Monitoring and inspecting of logbooks, abstracts and periodic returns submitted by the vessels.
  • Day-to-Day Issues: Advising the Fleet Manager on day-to-day issues and Senior Management of ship operating difficulties and non-routine issues as appropriate.
  • Ship Visits and Inspections: Carrying out periodic ship visits, inspections and drills with appropriate reporting to the Fleet Manager, Senior Management and client as appropriate.
  • Audit and Compliance: Auditing of vessels as required by the Management System.
  • Documentation and Communication: Maintaining appropriate documentation and promulgating technical bulletins as necessary for the safe and efficient running of managed vessels.
  • Manning and Training: Ensuring the day-to-day manning of vessels with technically competent staff with the relevant experience.
  • Service Provision: Co-ordinating and monitoring the efficient, safe and economic provision of all services required for ship operation including where appropriate port services, agents, bunkering, storing, surveys and external contractors etc.
  • Financial Management: Assisting the Fleet Manager in the preparation of annual operating cost budgets within their area of expertise and ensuring all costs associated with the vessel's technical operations are correctly predicted and allowed for.
  • Shipyard and Repair Management: Preparing budgets and specifications for dry-docking and voyage repairs. Analysing quotations and liaising with clients on dry-dock selection along with scheduling, supervision, and settlement of invoices. Ensuring the completion of shipyard appraisal forms are carried out.
  • Procurement and Expenditure: Verifying and authorising the price and availability quotations obtained by the purchasing department in respect of spares, supplies and services for vessels not under shipboard management. Expenditure out with authorisation limit to be discussed and justified to the Fleet Manager and Senior Management as appropriate to authorisation limits.
  • Financial Reporting: Monitor vessel expenditure to allow accurate understanding when preparing end-of-month financial reporting. Financial reporting to be accurately completed and passed to Fleet Manager for review.
  • Insurance Claims: Assisting the Fleet Manager in the preparation of Insurance Claim reports and submissions.
  • Appraisals and Performance Management: Interviewing Masters, Chief Engineers and other senior officers during office brief/debrief visits and participate in the periodic appraisals of senior officers within their area of expertise.
  • Cover and Support: Provide cover for Fleet Manager during periods when they are travelling on business or during holiday periods.
  • Liaison and Communication: Liaison with all departments involved with support to vessels under their responsibility.
  • Recruitment and Selection: Interviewing sea staff recruits within their area of expertise as requested by the Personnel Department.
  • Travel and Inspections: Occasional travel as required.
  • OVID and Inspections: OVID and similar inspections arranged in due time and in line with the Owners requirements. Subsequent responses to be compiled with minimal delay and submitted to external parties only after obtaining authorisation from the Fleet Manager.
  • Government and Organisations: Liaising and co-operating with governmental and other organisations connected with ship operations.
  • Additional Responsibilities: You may be asked from time to time to undertake other tasks that are considered to be relevant to your position.
  • Projects and Initiatives: Projects as assigned by Senior Management.
  • Emergency Response: Emergency Role: Member of the Casualty Response Team.
