About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Senior Nurse to join our Children's Complex Care team at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS FT. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing expert clinical care and advice to staff, children, and families with complex healthcare needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Practice and Scope of Professional Practice, ensuring professional and legal accountability for all activities.
  • Provide clinical expertise to staff caring for children and young people requiring long-term ventilated care.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive, evidence-based nursing care plans for children within their own home and/or other community settings.
  • Collaborate with the service clinical manager to maintain and improve the quality of practice and service delivery.
  • Conduct audits to demonstrate effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
  • Support the development of clinical pathways across acute and primary care settings.
  • Ensure that Essential Care Indicators (ECIs) are completed and acted upon to ensure improvements are made in a timely manner.
  • Support equality and diversity in all professional duties and working relationships, considering the cultural, religious, and spiritual needs of children and their families.
  • Delegate and monitor the individual caseload of team members for effective and timely caseload management and reporting to the service manager.
  • Liaise with and work in collaboration with acute services, primary healthcare teams, and other agencies when planning and implementing programs of care.
  • Recognize situations that may be detrimental to a child's physical and psychological well-being and take action according to Trust and local agency policies.
  • Teach and mentor staff in areas of self-care and appropriate nursing practice.
  • Undertake risk assessments prior to service delivery within the home setting to ensure staff safety.
  • Ensure staff maintain trust standards in record keeping and maintain clear and contemporaneous records.
  • Ensure safeguarding of children by attending required training, receiving safeguarding supervision, and deputizing for the service clinical manager as required.
Requirements
  • Registered Children's Nurse (RSCN) or Registered Nurse (RN) Child Branch or equivalent qualification.
  • Evidence of recent post-basic training.
  • Community Children's Nursing qualification degree level or willingness to undertake.
  • ENB 998 (Teaching & Assessing in Clinical Practice) or equivalent.
  • Clinical assessment course or Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
  • Independent supplementary nurse prescriber (desirable).
  • Experience working with children with complex health needs, including end-of-life care.
  • Extensive experience working as RSCN/RN Child Branch.
  • Ability to manage the team on a day-to-day basis.
  • Demonstrate knowledge relating to child protection issues and procedures.
  • Evidence of assessment skills and use of the nursing process and nursing models.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Care.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of current legislative changes affecting the NHS and Social Services, particularly those affecting primary care.
  • Ability to demonstrate up-to-date knowledge and application of clinical trends and practices, including evidence-based, particularly concerning Children's Community Nursing.
  • Ability to teach relatives, patients, clients, students, and staff across all areas of self-care and appropriate nursing practice.
  • Independently mobile across the trust.
  • Flexible approach to working hours, times, and days of the week.
