We are seeking a skilled Railway Track Specialist to join our team at Network Rail.

Job Description

This is a critical role in maintaining the daily upkeep of the rail network, ensuring safe and smooth operation for passengers and freight users. As a technician, you will work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance tasks. Our technician community comes from various backgrounds, and we focus on transferable skills and behaviors. If you demonstrate these qualities, we will provide necessary training for safe and competent work out on the network.

About the Role

You will be responsible for inspecting and repairing the track network, including rails, sleepers, and ballast that support trains. This manual role requires working with equipment and structures in demanding conditions, including extreme weather and challenging terrain. You must be safety-focused, respectful of rules, and a team player, often working next to moving trains traveling at high speed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain, inspect, and repair the track network to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Work outdoors in all conditions, day or night, with possible involvement in demanding manual tasks.
  • Lead teams when required by the team leader, using skills to deliver work safely and checking team competency to meet strict safety standards.
  • Serve as a role model for safe working behaviors and challenge potential risks to safety.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Leadership – Lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
  • Effective Communicator – Strong communication skills, delivering clear instructions to the team and other colleagues.
  • Technical Skills – Knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques in your discipline.
  • Safety – Consistently model safe behaviors, arrange and implement safe systems of work, and challenge if you think a situation is unsafe.
  • Problem Solver – Persistent in finding safe and effective solutions, developing relevant skills and competencies.
  • Willingness to Learn – Develop your skills and competencies relevant to your discipline, keeping up-to-date with new standards, procedures, and instructions.
  • Relevant Qualification – NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to your discipline or equivalent experience.

Working Conditions and Benefits

The role involves a changing shift pattern, including days, nights, and weekends. You will work outside in all weathers, so being comfortable in different conditions is essential. Safe working practices are crucial, and offers of employment are subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessments, and pre-employment checks. A driving license (category B) is also required for operating Network Rail vehicles. The ideal candidate should be within a 60-minute commute of the location they apply for.

Salary Information
