We are proud to be part of East Midlands Railway, a company that values diversity and inclusion. Our Commercial team is passionate about using data to drive transformational change and make a measurable difference. We are seeking a talented Commercial Data Engineer to join our team and help us achieve our goals.
The successful candidate will play a key role in implementing our data strategy within the Commercial team and supporting the wider data community across the business. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about using data to drive business outcomes and make a real impact.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with colleagues across the Commercial team to identify challenges and opportunities and design data solutions to address them.
- Analyse current workflows to identify opportunities for automation, optimisation and value creation through improved use of data.
- Work closely with the EMR data team to extract, transform, and load data from various sources into the EMR Data Analytics Platform, ensuring data quality and integrity is always maintained.
- Develop and build sophisticated, insightful and user-friendly business intelligence dashboards.
- Develop and maintain a roadmap for improving the integration, visibility and interrogation of data in the Commercial team.
- Apply project management tools and techniques to coordinate and apply governance to the development roadmap, using agile delivery principles to deliver quick wins and continual incremental improvements.
- Champion and promote the value of data, analytics and business intelligence systems across the business, demonstrating clear benefits from outputs created.
Key Skills & Experience:
- Educated to at least degree level or equivalent, with organisational experience in a similar role.
- Experience in sourcing data from disparate systems, with an excellent understanding of data transfer, loading, transformation, storage and interrogation.
- Experience working with cloud data platforms and databases, in particular Microsoft Azure.
- Able to create programming code from scratch in a variety of formats including SQL.
- Experience working with business intelligence and analytics systems, including Tableau and PowerBI.
- Knowledge of best practices for data visualisation and how to make data easy to understand, including for non-technical users.
- Ability to apply project management principles to plan and execute data projects successfully.
- Ability to interpret business requirements and develop data solutions to solve problems, generate insights or capture efficiencies.
- A willingness to take initiative, lead projects and handle multiple priorities whilst meeting deadlines.
- Self-motivation, positivity and determination to act as a data leader in the business, working well within a team and cross functionally.
- Strong organisation, analytical and communication skills.
As well as a competitive salary, we'll also offer you:
- 32 days annual leave (including bank holidays), rising to 34 days after 2 years of service
- Free travel on East Midlands Railway and other train companies operated by Transport UK
- 75% discount on other national rail train companies, including for partners and dependants
- Discounted friends and family tickets on the EMR network
- Various personal development and progression opportunities
EMR has a hybrid working policy which is applicable for this role. This means the role can be based at home 2-3 days per week and in the office 2-3 days per week. Should you wish to work full time in the office this is also an option.
We are open minded to applications from people who wish to have flexible working. Many of our staff work flexibly in many different ways. Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you need. We can't promise to give you exactly what you want, but we do promise not to judge you for asking.
