Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, United Kingdom National Grid Full time

About the role

The UK has set out its ambition to achieve net zero by 2050, driving the energy industry's response. Together, we are building a cleaner, greener Britain.

As an Engineering Manager within Digital, Data and Technology (DD&T), you will lead the engineering delivery for various programmes in the Engineering Solutions area.

This role is based in Warwick, with hybrid working arrangements from office and home.

About us

We operate at the heart of the electricity system as Great Britain's electricity system operator (ESO). Our outstanding engineering and commercial expertise ensures the balance of electricity supply and demand.

Our ultimate goal is to keep the electricity flowing directly to where it's needed, second by second.

In Summer 2024, the ESO will transition into the National Energy System Operator (NESO) role.

NESO will be an independent body responsible for planning Great Britain's electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

The ESO, including all existing roles, will be central to NESO's operations. As NESO, we will build on our existing capabilities and ways of working to create an organisation that meets the energy system's needs.

Our new capabilities will enable us to consider trade-offs between vectors like electricity, natural gas, and hydrogen.

NESO will be set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, ensuring operational independence from government, regulators, and commercial interests.

NESO will be licensed and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements, obligated to identify optimal solutions for system operations and planning in a sustainable, affordable, and secure manner.

The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you'll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Develop and lead high-performing, multi-discipline engineering teams to generate solutions that meet customer needs.
  2. Own the engineering delivery strategy and resource profile based on estimates to ensure project delivery.
  3. Manage interfaces with the overall delivery strategy for the wider programme.
  4. Work with the Senior Delivery Manager to define the organisation and work breakdown required to deliver to customer needs.
  5. Define the engineering team's work packages in terms of resources required, budgets assigned, risks, and assumptions on these and timescales to deliver within.
  6. Plan and prioritise activities required to deliver the solution to the contract schedule, costs, and quality.
  7. Day-to-day management of the engineering team's activities, ensuring proactive management of issues, opportunities, and risks.
  8. Work with the Scrum Master to report engineering efficiency for the project.
  9. Act as People Manager for the engineering team on the project, providing feedback into people manager reviews with functional discipline leads.

About you

We're looking for someone with:

  1. An engineering degree and 5+ years of management experience.
  2. Proven experience as a technical leader, ideally within Azure.
  3. Confidence in writing and reading code.
  4. Experience mentoring and coaching engineers.
  5. Experience developing engineering skills in line with business needs.
  6. Experience implementing best practices and ways of working across a team.
  7. Demonstrable experience working in Agile environments and an Agile culture and ethos.
  8. A deep understanding of translating product and business goals into technology solutions.
  9. Possession of passion for what they do, keeping current best practices in their areas of expertise.
  10. Great influencing and communication skills, with a love of sharing knowledge and helping others grow.

What you'll get

A competitive salary of £74,500 - £94,000 dependent on experience and capability, plus a bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance.

You'll receive 28 days annual leave as standard, a comprehensive contributory pension scheme with company contribution matching, and access to a range of wellbeing and lifestyle benefits.

We promote a healthy work-life balance and offer ongoing skill development aligned to our Purpose and Values.

We celebrate individuality and provide a supportive community where you can belong.
