Position: Cyber Researcher

Location: Flexible within the UK

We are seeking skilled Cyber Researchers and Reverse Engineers who are passionate about tackling complex challenges that significantly influence national security. Role Overview

As a Cyber Researcher, you will design and implement research initiatives across various technologies and systems, with a focus on detecting and exploiting vulnerabilities in design or implementation. This position requires you to offer technical insights to clients and assist in proposals and bids. Cyber Researchers should possess a wide array of skills, including:

  • Exploratory Research
  • Vulnerability & Technical Research
  • Experimental Development

Core Responsibilities

Researchers engaged in exploratory research will be responsible for:

  • Quickly assessing and summarizing new domains
  • Providing domain expertise for technical evaluations, experimental development, and subsequent engineering

Researchers focused on vulnerability and technical research should:

  • Exhibit proficiency in selecting appropriate penetration testing and reverse engineering tools and methodologies for specific challenges
  • Have experience with advanced vulnerability assessment techniques, including fuzzing and code injection

Researchers involved in experimental development will be tasked with:

  • Designing, assessing, and prioritizing prototype and simulated capabilities

Essential Skills and Experience

Cyber Research requires a diverse skill set. The foremost skill is the ability to think systematically and methodically analyze complex systems. For entry-level positions, a solid understanding of computer operations is necessary (e.g., recognizing the differences between heap and stack memory, compiled versus interpreted languages). Additional key skills for this role include:

  • Technical writing
  • Presentation skills
  • Innovative problem-solving
  • Team collaboration
  • Technical Analysis
  • Scripting skills (e.g., Python)
  • Rapid prototyping or simulation development capabilities (e.g., with C#)

In addition to the above, an Operational Cyber Researcher should have expertise in at least one of the following areas, ideally spanning multiple domains:

Researchers should be skilled in selecting the most appropriate tools for their tasks. Tools may include:

  • Scripting languages (e.g., Python)
  • Traffic capture and analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark)
  • Disassemblers (e.g., IDA Pro)
  • Debuggers (e.g., gdb)
  • Decompilers (e.g., Hex-Rays Decompiler)
  • Virtualization environments
  • Integrated development environments
  • Domain-specific simulation and development tools
