Position: Cybersecurity Research Specialist

Location: Flexible within the UK

We are seeking skilled Cybersecurity Researchers and Reverse Engineers committed to tackling critical challenges that significantly influence national security. Role Overview

As a Cybersecurity Research Specialist, you will plan and conduct research across various systems and technologies, concentrating on identifying and leveraging design or implementation vulnerabilities. This position involves offering technical guidance to clients and assisting in proposals. Cybersecurity Researchers should possess a diverse skill set that includes:

  • Exploratory Research
  • Vulnerability & Technical Research
  • Experimental Development

Key Duties

Researchers engaged in exploratory research are responsible for:

  • Quickly summarizing and assessing new domains
  • Providing domain expertise for technical analysis, experimental development, and subsequent engineering

Researchers focused on vulnerability & technical research should:

  • Exhibit proficiency in selecting appropriate penetration testing and reverse engineering tools and methodologies for specific challenges
  • Have experience with advanced vulnerability assessment techniques such as fuzzing and code injection

Researchers involved in experimental development are tasked with:

  • Creating, assessing, and prioritizing prototype and simulated capabilities

Essential Skills and Experience

Cybersecurity Research requires a broad skill set. The primary skill needed is the ability to think systematically and methodically analyze complex systems. For entry-level positions, an intermediate to advanced understanding of computer operations is crucial (e.g., distinguishing between heap and stack memory, compiled versus interpreted languages). Additional key skills for this role include:

  • Scripting skills (e.g., Python)
  • Rapid prototyping or simulation development skills (e.g., with C#)

Researchers should be skilled in selecting the most appropriate tools for a given task. Tools may include:

  • Scripting languages (e.g., Python)
  • Traffic capture and analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark)
  • Disassemblers (e.g., IDA Pro)
  • Debuggers (e.g., gdb)
  • Decompilers (e.g., Hex-Rays Decompiler)
  • Virtualization environments
  • Integrated development environments
  • Domain-specific simulation and development tools
