Job Purpose

To provide expert technical support to the Particle Physics Experiment Group at the University of Glasgow, focusing on the development and integration of readout electronics and high-voltage systems for the Mighty Tracker and Vertex Locator projects within the LHCb Upgrade II data acquisition system.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Lead the development and adaptation of readout electronic printed circuit boards for the LHCb Upgrade 2 Mighty Tracker and VELO detectors, utilizing dedicated ASICs and FPGAs.
  2. Design, fabricate, and test prototype electro-optical readout for the Mighty Tracker, including the creation of a fast and efficient validation system for the readout boards and testing the full set of links to confirm functionality.
  3. Design and/or test high-speed data transmission for the VELO in the GHz range.
  4. Provide expert support for the design and characterization of electronics boards, perform tests, and ensure quality control of printed circuit boards.
  5. Work autonomously, define tasks, and report weekly at group meetings, with the ability to self-organize and prioritize tasks based on technical papers, collaboration meetings, and workshops.
  6. Supervise and/or manage junior team members/students, creating plans, schedules, assigning tasks, monitoring, and tracking to closure.
  7. Collaborate with teams from other universities and laboratories in Europe.
  8. Perform electronics design/testing and related activities at national and international laboratories.
  9. Represent the university at national and international collaboration meetings, providing reports on work.
  10. Work in a team of physicists, engineers, and technicians to set up measurement systems to characterize printed circuit boards and associated electronics.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and ExperienceEssential
  • A1: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4 Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, with experience of personal development in electronics engineering or a similar role.
  • A2: Strong printed circuit board design background, including the use of dedicated design software.
  • A3: Knowledge of industrial printed circuit board manufacturing and assembly processes, with the ability to liaise with commercial enterprises to negotiate requirements and production processes.
  • A4: Experience testing semiconductor sensors, electronics printed circuit boards, or equivalent.
Desirable
  • B1: Extensive knowledge or qualifications pertaining to the area of research or related (such as a BEng or MEng degree or equivalent in Electrical or Electronic Engineering).
  • B2: Knowledge of electronics reliability models.
Skills
  • C1: Design, development, and debugging of electronic circuits.
  • C2: Design of printed circuit boards.
  • C3: Testing and quality assurance of printed circuit boards.
  • C4: Aptitude to take a problem or project from conception to completion.

  • E1: Significant relevant work or research experience with the relevant skillset.
Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6/7, £332,332 - £36,024 or £39,347 - £44,263 per annum. This post is full-time (35 hours per week), and has funding for up to 2 years in the first instance.
