Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Process Safety Engineer to join our team at Wessex Water. As a key member of our Process Safety Management team, you will be responsible for developing and deploying process safety systems in high-hazard facilities across the company.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Process Safety Director in developing and deploying the Process Safety Management System (PSMS) and long-term strategy
  • Directly supply hands-on support to high-hazard facilities with the deployment of PSMS study tools, leading on the implementation of risk assessment study processes such as HazID, HazOp, LOPA, OBRA, Bowtie, etc
  • Support the ongoing development and augmentation of process safety standards for specialist topic areas such as barrier management, LOPA, OBRA, MoC, human factors, emergency preparedness, etc
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and professional competence in process safety systems, including legislative requirements and industry best techniques
  • Translate oil and gas and process industry best practices to the water industry context and liaise widely with industry process safety networks, such as Water UK
  • Promote, analyse, and develop Process Safety Performance Indicators (PIs) such as LoC, and work with Operational Management teams, process safety experts, and engineering functions to develop and implement risk reduction initiatives
  • Assist with the ongoing development and maintenance of the Wessex Water PSMS, leading the generation of specific technical standards, codes of practice, and guides where required
  • Lead new process safety risk studies and assist in the cyclic review and augmentation of existing process safety risk assessments
  • Monitor the provision of process safety risk assessments by outside consultants or OEMs
  • Assist the ongoing development of process safety competence within Wessex Water and take an active role in developing and delivering training courses to increase PSM knowledge and ownership whilst further developing the process safety culture
Requirements
  • Good understanding of process safety management system principles and COMAH legislation
  • Ability to facilitate risk assessment processes and good understanding of bow tie analysis and barrier management
  • Good understanding of the industry environment and processes, sufficient to advise on process safety management
  • Thorough understanding of the management of change principles and assist with the thorough deployment of the Wessex Water management of change policy and procedures (MoC) within the company's high-hazard facilities
  • Ability to analyse complex problems and understand probability and risk
  • Excellent communication and people skills and be capable of detailed investigation and analysis
  • Demonstrate professional competence in the specific area of engineering/technical specialty plus a good understanding of process safety management elements outside the area of their own expertise
  • Be degree qualified, preferably in chemical, process engineering, or equivalent, and ideally be a chartered member of an associated professional body
  • Experience (minimum of 5 years) in the oil and gas, or process industry, operating under COMAH regulations
