About the Role

The Charles Dickens Museum is seeking an exceptional Academic Director to lead our institution in providing active leadership and effective management of the Museum and its staff. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for driving the development and implementation of our Strategic Plan, leading fundraising efforts, and overseeing marketing, press, and PR initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement the Strategic Plan, ensuring the Museum's future viability and growth.
  • Lead fundraising efforts from trusts, foundations, public funders, and individual donors, securing significant income for core work and projects.
  • Oversee marketing, press, and PR initiatives, promoting the Museum's brand and increasing awareness among diverse audiences.
  • Manage stakeholder and funder relationships, building strong partnerships and ensuring excellent communication.
  • Ensure the smooth and effective running of the Museum, adhering to Accreditation requirements and Health & Safety legislation.
  • Provide strong leadership and management to the staff team, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.
Requirements
  • Extensive experience in the cultural sector at a senior level, with a proven track record in income generation and fundraising.
  • Strong commercial acumen and entrepreneurial flair, with experience in managing budgets and finances.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with a wide range of stakeholders and partners.
  • Experience of being the public face of an organisation, with media relations and staff development skills.
  • Understanding of the digital space and its role in museums/heritage and culture, with experience of working with a Board and commitment to equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
What We Offer
  • A competitive salary in the range of £60,000 - £65,000 p.a., depending on experience.
  • 25 days' annual leave (plus 8 statutory public holidays) and a pension scheme.
