Job Title: Academic Director

The Charles Dickens Museum is seeking an experienced and visionary Academic Director to lead our institution in its mission to promote the life and works of Charles Dickens. As a key member of our senior leadership team, you will be responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight of our academic programs, exhibitions, and collections.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for the Museum's academic programs, exhibitions, and collections.
  • Lead fundraising efforts to support the Museum's academic initiatives and ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the institution.
  • Oversee the development and promotion of commercial opportunities, including partnerships, sponsorships, and licensing agreements.
  • Ensure the Museum operates in compliance with all regulatory requirements and advises the Board accordingly.
  • Work closely with the Board through regular meetings with the Chair and attendance at Committee and Board meetings.
Requirements:
  • Extensive experience in the cultural sector at a senior level, with a proven track record in income generation and strategic planning.
  • Strong commercial acumen and entrepreneurial flair, with experience in managing budgets and finances.
  • Proven track record in fundraising for core work and significant projects, with a strong network of contacts and relationships.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with a wide range of stakeholders and partners.
  • Experience of working with a Board and commitment to equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Desirable:
  • Experience of working in a museum or heritage context, with knowledge of the digital space and its role in museums/heritage and culture.
Terms and Conditions:
  • Contract: Full-time permanent contract.
  • Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
  • Salary: In the range of £60,000 - £65,000 p.a., depending on experience.
  • Holiday allowance: 25 days' annual leave (plus 8 statutory public holidays).
  • Probationary period: 6 months.
  • Notice period: 1 month during the probationary period and 6 months thereafter.
