About the Role

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a skilled Controls Technician to join its established team dedicated to the development of building automation, security, electronic, electromechanical systems, and ICT based systems.

This role will be based across the large and complex acute hospital estate at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and its satellite sites, with occasional support required across the Trust.

The successful candidate will report to the Estates Officer (Engineering Controls and Automation) and be supported by Electrical, Mechanical, and Building leads responsible for compliance and development in their respective specialist fields.

Main Responsibilities

As a Controls Technician, you will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective maintenance and operation of plant, equipment, and services controlled by the building energy management and building automation systems.

You will continually develop, install, configure, and commission new and/or replacement intelligent controllers on the Trust's dedicated building management system network.

You will also support the Trust's security manager on matters including door access and CCTV, as well as the Estates Team on ICT systems and networking exclusive to Estates.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have a basic education to GCSE/O Level in Maths and English or post-secondary education training in a relevant field.

Desirable qualifications include formal Schneider Training, an equivalent qualification such as NVQ Level 3 in a relevant Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering discipline, or BTEC/ONC in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering.

The candidate should have knowledge of safe systems of work and completion of a registered apprenticeship or structured training program in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering for at least 3 years.

Minimum 2 years post-training site experience, with high versatility and flexibility, is also required.

Competencies

The successful candidate will be able to clearly communicate with line managers and trade staff on issues/problems arising from BMS problems.

They will be computer literate with accurate keyboard inputting, able to work without supervision, and confident in taking decisions based on their own ability.

The ideal candidate will also be capable of working to deadlines, able to read engineering/building drawings, and have a satisfactory DBS check.

Good previous attendance record and a flexible working approach are also essential.
