Job Overview

The Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking an experienced Practice Educator to join our team in the Operating Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for supporting staff in developing the advanced skills required to provide effective nursing care in the theatre environment.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical expertise in all levels of theatre nursing and supervise staff in clinical practice to promote the acquisition of new skills and knowledge.
  • Assess, supervise, and develop all members of the nursing team in conjunction with team leaders and other members of the unit education team.
  • Contribute to the planning, development, and implementation of education and training programs and opportunities for all members of the nursing staff.
  • Jointly coordinate, develop, and manage the Theatre preceptorship course, Student Nurse/ODP's on Placement.
  • Assist in the coordination and development of the Induction of new staff in Theatres.
  • Participate in the Theatre Coordinator Team and cover any Coordinator shifts when colleagues are unavailable.
  • Carry out audits and reviews of practice and policies within the unit.
  • Lead or contribute to the development of clinical practice policies and evidence-based practice as appropriate.
  • Lead or contribute to the implementation of new policies and procedures.

Person Specification
  • Registered nurse or ODP.
  • Mentorship qualification.
  • Theatre qualifications in two specialties.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Appropriate management or leadership courses.
  • Significant and demonstrable experience in theatre practice.
  • Experience in managing staff, including appraisals, performance, absence, selection, and recruitment.
  • Budgetary experience, particularly in staff and consumable costs.
  • Experience in service development and support in change management.
  • Extensive knowledge in education and training within the theatre environment.
  • Experience of clinical audit.
Skills and Abilities
  • Good communication skills, evidence of teaching and assessing.
  • Good organisational skills, able to work as part of a team.
  • Sound understanding of clinical governance processes.
