Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated SEN Higher Level Teaching Assistant to join our team at a new 5-19 special needs provision in Harrow.

You will play a key role in shaping this exciting new provision, supporting the growth of the school and teaching assistant team, and mentoring newly appointed staff.

Your primary responsibility will be to support the class teacher and SENCO with all elements of the day-to-day running of the class/subject areas. You will also teach whole classes, groups, and individual lessons in consultation with the class teacher, taking the lead in their absence.

You will assess, record, and report on pupil development, progress, and attainment, as well as know and understand the class teacher's curriculum planning. This involves planning, preparing, and delivering assigned programs of teaching and learning activities for individuals, small groups, or classes, modifying and adapting activities as necessary within agreed systems of supervision.

An expectation of a higher-level teaching assistant is to establish warm, caring, and supportive relationships with pupils, enabling them to feel safe and enjoy their time at the school. You will promote independence and personal development in pupils, maintaining high expectations of behavior at all times.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Higher level teaching assistant diploma or equivalent level 4 qualification (desirable)
  • GCSE pass above C (or 4 in the new GCSE system) in English and Maths
  • Relevant knowledge of experience working with pupils with SEN or SEMH/ASD
  • Understanding of safeguarding principles and child protection procedures
  • Experience managing a range of approaches to behavior, including challenging behaviors
  • Positive and creative approach to meeting individual pupil needs
