Key Responsibilities

An independent rail consultancy is seeking a Senior Commercial Manager or Railway Project Manager to join their Birmingham based team. The successful candidate will play a key role in managing the financial aspects of construction projects within the rail sector from inception to completion.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Leading a team of quantity surveyors working on rail projects and providing guidance and support as needed to internal and external customers.
  2. Collaborating with project managers, rail engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to ensure rail project objectives are met.
  3. Providing procurement advice and working with customers to develop estimates, tender documentation, process and evaluation tools.
  4. Providing technical support on contract interpretation, negotiation and wider commercial strategies for internal and external customers.
  5. Leading and continuously improving change management, commercial forecasting and reporting, working closely with other functions.
  6. Ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and contractual obligations, including those specific to rail infrastructure and government procurement processes.
  7. Seeking out opportunities to add value in customer delivery and future propositions.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  1. Strong experience in Quantity Surveying or commercial management role.
  2. A relevant degree or master's qualification in quantity surveying or similar equivalent subject.
  3. A background in railway / construction projects.
  4. Understanding of pre-contract processes, including procurement, tendering, and invitation to tender packs.
  5. Proven track record in managing NEC 3 contracts.
  6. Ability to provide expert advice on dealing with clients and stakeholders, whether that be with a consultancy, main-contractor or end client.
  7. Experience in line management and leading a team.
