Job Title: Chief Scientific Adviser for National Security

MI5 is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Scientific Adviser for National Security to join our team. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in providing strategic advice on national security science and technology to the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and the intelligence agencies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic advice on national security science and technology to the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and the intelligence agencies.
  • Lead on the development of science and technology strategies for national security, including the Science, Technology and Engineering Programme (STEP).
  • Engage with academia, international partners, and industry to access and influence the best thinking and innovation to address national security problems.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive understanding of the international science and technology landscape to inform UK national security thinking.
  • Support the development of science and technology research and development programmes across the community.
  • Sponsor innovation and engagement with the National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF).
  • Oversee the MI5, SIS, and GCHQ Scientific Advisory Council.
  • Represent the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and national security science in a range of HMG fora.
Requirements:
  • Credibility as a scientist, engineer, or technologist, renowned in a relevant discipline.
  • Excellence in communication, able to connect across science, mission, and policy communities.
