Job Title: Operations & Rail Supervisor

Department: Rail Operations

Location: Manchester

Reports to: Operations & Rail Supervisor 'D' or Operations Manager

Job Purpose

The Operations & Rail Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the freight terminal, including the supervision of train departure and arrival procedures, crane and lifting equipment operations, and the management of staff and resources.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Ensure train departure and arrival procedures are carried out in accordance with safety standards and regulations.
  2. Supervise the daily operation of the terminal, including the management of staff, equipment, and resources.
  3. Liaise with the Operations & Rail Supervisor 'D' to ensure a workable daily train plan is in place.
  4. Roster operational staff and equipment to ensure continuous and efficient operation of the terminal.
  5. Co-ordinate the work of the shift handling team, including rail shunting and the operation of lifting equipment.
  6. Ensure safe loading and unloading of trains in accordance with Network Rail and F/L regulations.
  7. Ensure a safe working environment within their area of responsibility.
  8. Carry out safety, quality, and documentation checks of trains in accordance with Railtrack and F/L Regulations.
  9. Co-ordinate and direct the work of staff to ensure unloading/loading of trains and the movement of containers.
  10. Initiate safety checks of tanks and containers to ensure that safety and security requirements are met and certificated.
  11. Undertake other duties as directed by a member of Management commensurate with the post.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in crane operations and Freightliner Limited's Rules and Regulations and Local Working Instructions.
  • Proven man-management skills.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations, including Fire Safety training, Local Safety Induction, COSHH Appreciation, Dangerous Goods Awareness, and Personal Track Safety training.
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Training and Development

The successful candidate will be required to attend specific training courses, including:

  • Fire Safety training
  • Local Safety Induction
  • COSHH Appreciation
  • Dangerous Goods Awareness
  • Safe Loading Techniques (Working Manual for Rail Staff green pages)
  • Shunting course
  • Personal Track Safety training and certificated on completion of training.
Working Conditions

The Operations & Rail Supervisor will work in a fast-paced environment, with regular exposure to heavy machinery and equipment. The role requires strong physical and mental stamina, as well as the ability to work safely and efficiently in a variety of weather conditions.
