About the Role

The National Audit Office (NAO) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced corporate leader to join its Executive Team as an Executive Director. This is a key leadership position that will play a critical role in shaping the NAO's strategy and work.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of around 200 financial and performance auditors in delivering the NAO's new strategy. They will work closely with the Executive Team to execute the NAO's strategy for 2025 to 2030 and will be responsible for building a visible presence and strong personal engagement with colleagues across the NAO.

The ideal candidate will have significant senior experience of leading the delivery of complex professional work programmes and will be capable of inspiring and motivating a team to deliver high-quality outputs. They will also have a strong external perspective and be able to develop and communicate key insights to shape the NAO's strategy and work.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Business Management: Work collectively with Executive Team colleagues to achieve the NAO's strategic objectives.
  2. External Relationship Management: Interact with key audited bodies and stakeholders to ensure successful delivery, raise the NAO's profile, and extend its influence.
  3. Service Delivery: Provide strategic leadership for the delivery of a portfolio of work, including leading key aspects of client engagement and ensuring the delivery of work that achieves greatest impact and influence.
  4. Group Accountability: Personal responsibility for leading around 200 highly skilled financial auditors and performance auditors responsible for auditing a group of government departments and major public bodies, driving performance, and enabling continuous improvement.
  5. Ways of Working: Act as a role model for the NAO's people and exemplify positive business behaviours, including collaborative and inclusive ways of working.
