Nuclear Power Plant Structural Engineer Job Description

As a result of our continued success and growth in the UK, we're looking for full time Structural Engineers to join our team working on Nuclear New Build projects, specifically focusing on Nuclear Island buildings of Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C and similar projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and analyse reinforced concrete structures for the Nuclear Island Buildings of EPR nuclear power plants.
  • Perform structural calculations and modelling using ANSYS APDL or similar advanced software and tools, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Ensure the structural integrity and resilience of the reinforced concrete structures under various loads, including seismic, dynamic, impact of temporary works related to the construction sequence and environmental factors.
  • Collaborate with detailing team including drafting team, BIM Coordinator and other designer engineers as well as the technical direction team to ensure coordination and integration of design requirements.
  • Conduct calculations and structural assessments of design changes to determine the impact on the reinforced concrete structures and propose necessary design modifications.
  • Prepare detailed design drawings, specifications, and construction documentation for the reinforced concrete structures.
  • Work closely with construction contractors and site teams to resolve any structural issues or challenges during the construction phase.
  • Collaborate with the client, construction team and the principal designer as well as regulatory bodies and authorities to ensure compliance with nuclear safety regulations and requirements.
  • Stay updated with industry advancements, new technologies, and best practices in nuclear structural engineering.
Requirements:
  • With a background of working in the nuclear industry or another highly heavy industry sector, you'll have an established career in Civil Structural Engineering, with a MSc in Civil engineering or equivalent relevant subject.
  • Experience working on the design and analysis of reinforced concrete structures for nuclear power plants, specifically with European Pressurized Reactors (EPR).
  • Knowledge of nuclear safety principles, regulations, and standards governing the design and construction of nuclear power plant structures.
  • Proficiency in using structural analysis software, such as ANSYS, SAP2000, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with Eurocode standards and EPR-specific design guidelines for nuclear structures.
  • Strong understanding of seismic analysis and design principles for nuclear structures.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
  • Prior experience in the design and construction of reinforced concrete structures in a nuclear or high-risk industry.
  • Knowledge of construction processes, materials, and quality control procedures related to nuclear structures.
  • Professional licensure or chartered status in Structural Engineering is advantageous.
  • Experience with on-site design support: working with contractors on site to deliver the implementation of engineering solutions.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and compliance in nuclear engineering projects.
  • Experience of 3D BIM modelling such as TEKLA, Naviswork.
  • Excellent report writing and logical thinking.
