Matron for Paediatric Services

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Matron to join our team at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a Matron for Paediatric Services, you will be responsible for providing professional, clinical, and managerial leadership within our paediatric services.
Key Responsibilities- Provide dynamic collaborative leadership and direction across the areas within the Neonatal/Paediatric service.
- Act as a role model to provide excellent leadership and operational management in their assigned areas.
- Collaborate with all staff to maintain a safe, clean working environment, recognising changing priorities and risks, and implementing corrective actions within own limits and informing the relevant people.
- Lead the development of the work stream project plans and documents in accordance with successful programme methodologies.
- Be operationally responsible for leading the design and implementation of a monitoring framework of activities and outcomes as well as ongoing management of cross programme interdependencies, work stream resources and work stream level risks and issues.
- Hold others to account, in line with agreed milestone plans and delivery targets, identifying risks and initial remedial actions.
- Provide clinical leadership and develop standards to promote high quality practice.
- Ensure the provision of safe, effective, and high-quality care for all patients through neonatal and paediatric services from referral/admission to transfer/discharge within the multidisciplinary framework.
- Evaluate clinical practice and its outcomes to sustain and improve the quality of care in all aspects of neonatal and paediatric services for inpatient and outpatient.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with individuals and groups about difficult or complex matters overcoming any problems in communication.
- Prioritise and delegate workload appropriately, assess performance, allocate, co-ordinate, monitor and assess the work of individuals/teams.
- Manage own workload autonomously.
- Ensure the accurate, clear contemporaneous, legible records are kept with evidence of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.
- Develop and maintain nursing knowledge and practice by attending and participating in Continuing Professional Development and influence the development of others.
- Responsible for recognising and responding to situations which requires immediate action within both hospital and community setting.
- Contribute to practice, education and development, act as a resource for the support and guidance of staff and represent corporate and Directorate level interests.
- Participate in senior on call rota.
- Ensure that staffing levels are appropriate to patient need by working with Team Leaders and Nurses to assess patient dependency, adjust duty rotas and develop proposals for changes to skill mix and staff establishments accordingly including the use of information gathered from National and professional bodies.
- Leading by example to promote the service and disseminate good practice both internal and external to the Trust, demonstrating to nurses and staff the high standard of care that patients can expect.
- Liaise closely with multi-disciplinary staff to develop evidence based clinical standards, policies, and guidelines to support the efficient and effective service delivery.
- Provide visible, effective clinical leadership and management which fosters teamwork across professional and organisational boundaries.
- Support the clinical governance leads within the Divisions by contributing to the development and maintenance of governance processes, clinical incident reporting, risk management, policies, and procedures.
- To act as a role model and work within legislation and Trust procedures, ensuring the compliance of all staff working within the unit.
- Participate in the investigation of and action planning of reported incidents.
- Ensure all members of staff are aware of their responsibility for Safeguarding children including compliance with Trust policies and Safeguarding supervision.
- Ensure all staff comply with NMC regulations and work within their scope of practice.
Qualifications
Essential
- Registered Nurse/Children's nurse
- Evidence of recent relevant professional development
- Educated to Masters level or working towards
Desirable
- Evidence of safeguarding training
- Leadership and Management training
- Coaching qualification
Experience
Essential
- Experience as an operational manager at Band 7 level or equivalent minimum of 2 years
- Extensive experience of working as a practicing nurse
- Experience of working with stakeholders to improve quality of service
- Change management experience
- Performance and operational oversight
Desirable
- Experience in senior management position or senior clinical role
- Experience of quality improvement methodology and implementation of project
- Experience of performance management
- Experience of supporting learners and students not meeting sign of stages
- Experience of interprofessional working
Skills
