Maintenance Technician

We are seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Operator to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation. As a Maintenance Operator, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of our highway maintenance operations.
Key Responsibilities- Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
- Attend work zone training, prepare work zones, and perform traffic control
- Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques, including identifying workplace safety hazards, making suggestions for improvement, wearing proper personal protection equipment, maintaining current knowledge of safety rules, and using equipment properly and safely
- Participate as a working team member performing manual labor, including clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
- Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance, and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor
- Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
- Ability to perform safe and skilled operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair
- Experience in roadway maintenance and construction
- Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements
- Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
