Health and Safety Manager

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Health and Safety Manager to join our team at Thorn Baker Group. As a key member of our HSEQ team, you will be responsible for providing ongoing health and safety support to our construction sites in the Birmingham and West Midlands region.

Your primary focus will be on driving HSEQ initiatives, monitoring site safety performance, and ensuring compliance with ISO 45001 Safety, Quality, and Environment Management systems, company policies, and procedures. You will work closely with site management teams, technicians, and client safety teams to achieve this goal.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with the client and internal H&S team to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
  • Oversee and manage a small SHEQ team to ensure the delivery of HSEQ services.
  • Chair internal site H&S meetings to discuss safety performance and initiatives.
  • Attend client H&S meetings to ensure compliance with client requirements.
  • Support site teams on all H&S aspects, including safe systems of work, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
  • Review and improve safe systems of work to ensure they are effective and compliant.
  • Attend and advise during safe start meetings to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Manage day-to-day H&S activities on site, including conducting workplace inspections and reporting findings.
  • Conduct investigations into accidents or incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage on-site occupational health services to ensure the well-being of employees.
  • Coordinate training of project staff on HSEQ procedures and best practices.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of ISO 45001 certification to ensure ongoing compliance.

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience in a busy site-based H&S role within the construction industry.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with experience working with clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Technical knowledge of health and safety principles, including risk assessments, safe systems of work, and incident investigations.
  • IT literacy and proficient report-writing skills to ensure effective communication of HSEQ information.
