Role Purpose
The primary objective of this role is to facilitate access to learning for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges, and other emerging needs.
Key Responsibilities
Support for Students:
- Provide tailored supervision and assistance to students, particularly those with special needs, ensuring their safety and engagement in learning activities.
- Collaborate on the development and execution of Student Passports and progress tracking reports.
- Build positive relationships with students, serving as a role model and responding effectively to their individual needs.
- Encourage the inclusion and acceptance of all students, promoting interaction while fostering independence where appropriate.
- Deliver in-class and withdrawal support for individuals and small groups across various subjects.
- Act on guidance from colleagues and professionals, including Speech and Language Therapists and Educational Psychologists.
- Assist in creating educational resources tailored to student needs.
- Support students facing personal, emotional, social, and behavioral challenges by providing a listening ear and fostering a sense of value and respect.
- Enhance cognitive skills by reinforcing concepts and facilitating discussions to clarify understanding.
- Encourage problem-solving skills through investigative opportunities and diverse information sources.
- Promote participation in extracurricular activities.
- Monitor and document student progress, providing reports as necessary.
- Implement 'solution-focused' activities to help students overcome learning barriers and achieve their potential.
- Contribute to raising standards and achievements for students with SEND by enhancing self-esteem and aspirations.
Support for Teachers:
- Prepare classrooms for lessons and ensure a tidy environment post-lesson.
- Maintain a purposeful, safe, and supportive classroom environment in line with lesson plans.
- Utilize strategies in collaboration with teachers to help students achieve learning objectives.
- Assist in planning engaging learning activities.
- Support teachers in managing student behavior and report challenges as needed.
- Gather and relay information among parents, carers, students, and teachers as directed.
- Administer routine assessments, invigilate examinations, and assist with marking student work.
- Support subject leaders by personalizing resources and assisting with assessment and reporting.
- Advise on the effective use of specialized aids and resources.
Support for the School:
- Contribute to the school's vision and ethos.
- Adhere to policies related to child protection, safeguarding, health, safety, and confidentiality.
- Support diversity and ensure equal access to learning opportunities for all students.
- Participate in relevant meetings and training sessions as required.
- Engage in tutor time to support student registration and attendance.
- Supervise students during breaks and out of lessons as needed.
- Accompany staff and students on educational trips and activities as required.
- Cover for absent colleagues when necessary.
- Maintain high standards of personal presentation, attendance, and punctuality.
- Participate in the Canbury LSA Training Programme.
