European Patent Attorney Position

We are seeking a highly skilled European Patent Attorney to join our team at Canon, a leading technology company. As a key member of our intellectual property department, you will play a crucial role in protecting and enforcing our patents across Europe.

Job Summary:

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified European patent attorney with a strong background in digital standards and standard essential patents work. You will be responsible for drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications, as well as providing IP training and developing existing IP processes for group companies.

Responsibilities:

  • Drafting and filing patent applications for Canon's innovative technologies, including medical imaging, image sensor technologies, camera lenses, user interfaces, video systems, digital standards, image processing, control systems, and multi-function printer solutions.
  • Prosecuting patent applications before the European Patent Office (EPO) and UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO).
  • Liaising with patent engineers in Japan to coordinate prosecution strategies in the UK and Europe.
  • Providing IP support for digital standardization work carried out by Canon Research France (CRF).
  • Coordinating patent services for Canon group members, including Milestone, NT-ware, Therefore, IRIS, and Arcules.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of a university degree in a technical subject.
  • Fully or part qualified European and UK patent attorney.
  • Relevant working experience as a patent engineer or attorney, for example in a private practice or an in-house patent department.
  • Experience or interest in digital standards and/or standard essential patents work would be advantageous.
  • Some knowledge of AI technologies and patent law preferred but not essential.
  • Some experience or knowledge of foreign (non-UK/EP) patent prosecution preferred.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy essential.
  • Ability to understand business needs and risk.
  • Ability to analyse and adapt processes in order to improve efficiency and minimise risk.
  • Strong IT skills, including in Microsoft applications, particularly MS Excel and MS Access.
  • Time management skills to balance multiple concurrent tasks/projects.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to think outside the box.
  • Ability to supervise others' workload.
  • In addition to relevant local language(s), proficiency in English at working level required; where English is local language, proficiency in 2nd European language preferred.

What We Offer:

We offer a competitive salary of £85,000 - £100,000 per annum, depending on experience, plus benefits including annual bonus, hybrid working, flexible core hours, minimum of 25 days personal holiday, generous pension scheme, private healthcare, and up to 38% discount on Canon products.
