This is an exciting opportunity to join the Oregon State University Ship Operations team as a Able Mariner in our Newport location. As an Able Mariner, you will be responsible for assisting the Chief/First Mate on Oregon State University Research Vessels in the maintenance and repair of the vessel and its deck equipment, and to assist the mate on watch in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.

What We Offer

We offer a competitive hourly rate of $18, with pay periods running from the 16th to the 15th of the following month and pay dates on the last working day of the month.

Your Key Responsibilities

">

You will work on board OSU operated research vessels at sea on research cruises that may last from one day to three weeks or more before returning to port, in ocean and weather conditions which are highly variable. You will be required to clean, paint, and maintain ship's hull, decks, bulkheads, equipment, masts, quarters, heads, and tanks, load and unload equipment and stores, and operate ship's equipment such as winches, crane, boat, davits, anchor windlass, capstan, etc.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and six months of maritime experience. You must also have a Merchant Mariner's Credential with an endorsement of Able Seaman, Special, or higher issued by the Coast Guard, STCW endorsements as appropriate for this position, and the ability to read, speak, and write in English.

Working Conditions

This is a seven-day per week operation, and you may be required to work weekends and holidays. Shift and/or work assignment may change based on operational needs.
