Job Title: Health and Safety Advisor
Main Purpose of the Job:
The John Innes Centre is seeking a Health and Safety Advisor to join their team. The successful candidate will provide health and safety support to the centre by reviewing and updating health and safety documentation, providing advice and guidance on health and safety matters, and responding to emergency incidents when required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and update health and safety documentation, including risk assessments and safe working procedures.
- Provide general health and safety support, including advice on biological and chemical safety matters.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, and provide high-standard reports.
- Support the Head of Health and Safety with the daily administrative running of the occupational health clinics.
- Participate in laboratory audits and inspections.
- Contribute to safety improvement projects on site.
- Provide health and safety support to the Head of Health and Safety in relation to NGI projects.
- Respond to emergency incidents when required.
Person Profile:
Education and Qualifications:
- Health and Safety Certificate or equivalent.
- Bachelor's degree, Master's, or PhD in biology or biochemistry.
- Biological Safety Qualification.
Specialist Knowledge and Skills:
- Science background, especially in biology or biochemistry.
- Good knowledge and experience of working safely with hazardous materials in laboratory environments.
- Ability to prepare and review risk assessments, method statements, and standard operating procedures.
- Good level of proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Relevant Experience:
- Experience of working with hazardous chemicals and/or biological materials.
Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
- Being flexible and able to prioritise workload.
- Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well as part of a team.
- Enthusiastic and proactive approach to task completion and problem-solving.
- Excellent level of accuracy and numeracy skills.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of information where appropriate.
- Attention to detail.
- Able to undertake manual handling duties.

- Professional membership of IOSH, IIRSM, or other industry-recognised body.
