About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead AWS Platform Engineer to join our team at Octopus Energy, a leading global provider of innovative energy solutions. As a key member of our engineering team, you will play a critical role in designing and implementing secure and scalable AWS infrastructure to support our mission to unlock £30bn of value per annum from distributed energy resources.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the Design and Automation of AWS Infrastructure: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and automate the deployment of secure and scalable AWS infrastructure, ensuring seamless integration with our existing systems.
  • Own Technical Decisions and Platform Engineering Roadmap: Take ownership of technical decisions and drive the development of our platform engineering roadmap, aligning with our business objectives and industry best practices.
  • Build and Maintain Robust CI/CD Pipelines: Design and implement robust and secure CI/CD pipelines to ensure efficient and reliable software delivery, leveraging tools like GitHub and AWS CodePipeline.
  • Plan and Implement Solutions for Backup and Recovery, High Availability, and Key Management: Develop and implement solutions for backup and recovery, high availability, and key management, ensuring the security and integrity of our data and systems.
  • Solve Platform Problems with Software: Apply software development principles to solve complex platform problems, writing scalable, robust, and secure software in TypeScript to drive business outcomes.
  • Setup and Maintain Monitoring, Metrics, and Reporting Systems: Design and implement monitoring, metrics, and reporting systems for fine-grained observability and actionable alerting, leveraging tools like Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Lead a Team of Engineers and Foster a Culture of Growth: Lead a team of engineers, providing guidance, feedback, and opportunities for growth and development, promoting a culture of collaboration and innovation.
  • Effectively Communicate Goals, Expectations, and Feedback: Communicate clearly and effectively with team members, stakeholders, and leadership, ensuring alignment and understanding of goals, expectations, and feedback.
  • Work with Delivery Teams to Ensure AWS Well-Architected Framework Compliance: Collaborate with delivery teams to ensure our services adhere to the AWS Well-Architected Framework, promoting operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, cost optimization, and sustainability.
Requirements
  • Multiple Years of Experience with AWS: Proven experience working with AWS, with a strong understanding of its services and features.
  • Excellent Communication, Motivational, and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication, motivational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across functions and teams.
  • Team Leadership Experience: Experience leading teams, with a proven track record of driving results and fostering a culture of growth and innovation.
  • Experience with Implementing and Automating Security Best-Practices: Experience implementing and automating security best-practices, with a strong understanding of security processes and DevOps security tools.
  • Strong Understanding of Common AWS Services and Features: Strong understanding of common AWS services and features, including infrastructure-based services and software-based services.
  • Proficient with DevOps Methodologies and Tools: Proficient with DevOps methodologies and tools, including CI/CD, version control (GitHub), and full-stack repeatability.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code Tools: Experience with infrastructure as code tools, including CloudFormation, Terraform, and CDK.
  • Software Development Experience in TypeScript: Experience with software development in TypeScript, with a strong understanding of its features and best practices.
Desirable Skills
  • Foundational Networking Knowledge: Foundational knowledge of networking concepts, including switching, firewalls, routing, and DNS.
  • AWS Networking Knowledge: Strong understanding of AWS networking concepts, including VPCs, Transit Gateways, and multi-region environments.
  • Security Processes and DevOps Security Tools: Awareness of security processes and DevOps security tools, with a strong understanding of their application in a cloud-native environment.
