Job Title: Deputy Manager - Children's Residential Care
Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and skilled Deputy Manager to join our team at CareTech Group. As a Deputy Manager, you will play a key role in supporting the Registered Manager in achieving the aims and objectives of our children's residential care service.
Main Responsibilities:
- Assist the Registered Manager in achieving the aims and objectives of the service
- Deputise in the absence of the Registered Manager
- Support and manage staff to enable them to meet the needs of children and young people
- Undertake direct work with children and young people as appropriate
- Manage child protection concerns and complaints
- Work in partnership with other professionals to achieve optimum outcomes for young people
- Offer supervision and support to senior staff in line with National Minimum Standards
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure that each young person has an allocated key worker
- Ensure that each member of staff is aware of each child's placement plan and their responsibilities for its implementation
- Attend childcare reviews and planning meetings to provide information and achieve best outcomes for young people
- Undertake direct work with young people and act as an appropriate role model
- Assist in developing systems in which young people are consulted about the quality of care they receive
- Maintain accurate written records in logs, continuation sheets, and files
- Work in partnership with parents, carers, and other professionals to safeguard and promote the welfare of young people
- Chair children's meetings and facilitate consultation with young people
- Act as an appropriate adult at PACE interviews
Staff Management:
- Provide managerial control and direction in relation to staff duties and responsibilities
- Assist with the recruitment and retention of staff, including induction training for new staff
- Supervise new starters during their probationary period
- Develop a management style that balances control and direction with staff decision-making
- Take responsibility for planning shifts and ensuring their smooth running
- Provide consultation and informal advice and support to staff
- Offer 1:1 supervision to staff in line with National Minimum Standards
- Identify and progress individual training and development needs of staff
- Undertake annual appraisal of staff
- Address issues related to staff conduct and competence
Resource Management:
- Ensure adequate staffing levels to meet the needs of the service
- Manage budgets effectively and monitor the use of finances
- Ensure that company vehicles are clean and regularly maintained
- Monitor the fabric of the building and take remedial action where necessary
General Responsibilities:
- Assist the Registered Manager in implementing all aspects of the service
- Contribute to the devising, implementing, and evaluating changes to improve services, systems, and standards
- Deputise in the absence of the Registered Manager
- Drive company vehicles, subject to policies and procedures
- Work on a rota basis according to the needs of young people
- Ensure that resources are allocated appropriately and financial records are accurately maintained
- Receive supervision in line with National Minimum Standards and take responsibility for personal development and progress
Person Specification:
Essential:
- Secondary education with a good standard of literacy and numeracy
- NVQ 3 in caring for children and young people (or equivalent)
- Working towards NVQ 4
- Management qualification
- Current driving license
Desirable:
- NVQ 4
- Knowledge of National Minimum Standards
- Awareness of Equal Opportunities/ADP issues
- Knowledge of the Children Act and other relevant legislation
- Team building skills
- Supervision skills
- Ability to manage teams effectively
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing
- Understanding of the needs of BESD children, including managing challenging behavior

Experience:
- 1 year's relevant supervisory experience
- 12 months' experience of working in a residential setting with young people with challenging behavior
- Experience of acting as an appropriate adult (PACE)
