About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing tax team at RSM, a global professional services firm, in a specialist Innovation Reliefs tax team within the Central Region. The role involves working directly with IT specialists in various businesses who are at the forefront of their technology, while also experiencing a role in a global professional services firm.

Key Responsibilities
  • Managing R&D Engagements
    • Manage R&D engagements, including financial management and billing, staffing, risk procedures, deliverables, and client relationships.
  • Client Relationships and Business Development
    • Meet with clients and potential clients to explain our services.
    • Determine an appropriate scope of work and budget for each client and propose a fee quote.
  • R&D Tax Relief Claims
    • Develop claim methodologies and manage the preparation of R&D tax relief claims for submission to HMRC.
    • Coordinate and lead interviews with clients' technical and finance teams to advise on the R&D tax relief and to assist with identification of qualifying R&D activities and expenditure.
  • Technical Documentation and Communication
    • Write technical descriptions of the client's projects to include in the reports to be sent to HMRC.
    • Edit client-drafted technical descriptions, highlighting areas for improvement and suggesting changes.
  • Costing and Technological Documentation
    • Prepare robust costing and technological documentation to support the R&D claims based on the UK BIS guidelines and CIRD manual.
  • Internal and External Networking
    • Build an internal network within the wider parts of the firm and an external network with intermediary companies.
  • Business Development and Growth
    • Identify, lead on, and progress business development opportunities, pitching for work with both new and existing clients.
  • HMRC Enquiries and Compliance
    • Prepare documentation and liaison with HMRC in response to enquiries into R&D Tax claims.
  • Team Leadership and Support
    • Act as a point of contact on specific R&D projects for any queries from the business.
    • Review work completed by junior staff for accuracy and completeness, and provide constructive feedback.
  • Tax Quality and Compliance
    • Ensure tax quality at all times by adhering to the firm's quality standards.
  • Client Relationship Management
    • Ensure that the R&D engagement team are fully updated on progress and any issues that might affect the client relationship.
  • Communication and Collaboration
    • Communicate confidently and knowledgeably with other Managers, Associate Directors, Directors, and Partners within the firm.
  • Client Needs and Expectations
    • Perceive the needs and concerns of clients and adapt approaches to meet these needs, while maintaining effective and professional working relationships with key client personnel.
  • Service Line Development
    • Maintain an awareness of the firm's specialist services and publications, ensuring added value to clients and identifying opportunities for other service lines.
About the Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of computer science and software development, with a knowledge of Research and Development.

  • Education and Qualifications
    • Computer Science (or similar) degree or postgraduate qualification.
  • Industry Experience
    • Prior experience working in the software/IT industry.
  • Tax Technical Knowledge
    • Good level of tax technical knowledge of the UK's R&D tax incentives.
  • R&D Tax Relief Claims Experience
    • Experience in preparing and submitting R&D tax relief claims in the sector.
  • Communication and Writing Skills
    • Clear and concise writing style.
  • HMRC Enquiries Experience
    • Experience in responding to HMRC enquiries.
