Job Title: Principal Engineer - Product Safety

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Engineer - Product Safety to join our team. As a key member of our Safety & Environmental Team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety of our products during the design process. You will bring a broad understanding of safety analysis techniques and experience in applying them to different standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Holding requirement elicitation workshops
  • Applying Product Safety Recognised Good Practice (e.g. Defence Standard 00-56)
  • Coordinating and undertaking analysis (Hazard identification, Analysis and Assessment)
  • Risk reduction activities (reducing risk ALARP)
  • Defining suitable design options and analysing options
  • Applying a systems engineering approach to safety products including working within a centralised modelling tool
Technically leading and coordinating a small safety team as requiredPreparing safety assessments as required to support system design and developmentPreparation of Design Safety Justification supporting inputsProviding Safety SME to product design and gate reviewsGoverning and assuring parts of the organisationSupporting the development and maintenance of a healthy product Safety Culture within the team and wider business

Requirements:

Essential:

  • Familiarity with UK Defence Standard and publications such as Defence Standard 00-56, Defence Standard 00-55, DSA-01, DSA-02
  • Good working knowledge of safety analysis techniques such as:
    • Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA)
    • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
    • Event Tree Analysis (ETA)
    • Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)
    • System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA)
  • STEM degree with Product Safety experience within a regulated industry
  • Good working knowledge of the requirements of IEC 61508 and/or IEC 61511 for complex Software and Hardware Safety Instrumented Systems

Desirable:

  • Experience of model-based Systems Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer status or working toward chartership
  • Experience within the Defence Industry
  • Familiarity with Cyber-Safety concepts
  • Experience of development of complex Systems of Systems (SoS)
  • Knowledge of Safety standards and practices outside of the Defence domain such as Civil Aerospace, Rail, Oil & Gas or other Process Industries
