Specialist Paediatric Orthoptist

This is a specialist Orthoptist role within the Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHSFT, requiring proficiency and specialist skills in a sub-specialty area of Orthoptics, such as stroke and neuro, visual processing, special educational needs, and IVT injections.
The successful candidate will provide Orthoptic support to core paediatric and adult motility ophthalmology led clinics and undertake single-handed working in community clinics.
Key responsibilities include planning and prioritizing workload, making clinical judgments on new referrals, and arranging follow-up appointments for orthoptic patients.
The role also involves liaising with and giving detailed medical information to the Orthoptic team and other professions, as well as participating in the provision of patient information and communicating effectively with a diverse range of patients.
Key Responsibilities- As an autonomous practitioner, the successful candidate will be legally, professionally, and solely responsible for comprehensive investigative, diagnostic, and therapeutic orthoptic procedures.
- To ensure that each patient receives the highest standard of care.
- To assess and diagnose Orthoptic patients presenting to the department.
- To provide condition-related information to patients, relatives, and other medical staff.
- To communicate effectively with a diverse range of patients.
- To formulate individual patient management and treatment plans.
- To assess pre-op and post-ops and discuss with the Consultant Ophthalmologist.
- To attend MDT meetings with consultant ophthalmologist.
- To administer eye drops into children's eyes.
- To assess patients with complex ocular movement disorders.
- To work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- To signpost patients to the appropriate support services.
- To maintain professional standards.
- To contribute to future service development in Orthoptics.
- To liaise with safeguarding team and/or other agencies.
- To have excellent communication skills with all staff, patients, and parents/carers.
- Extended knowledge in area of specialism
- Evidence of postgraduate CPD
- Knowledge of clinical audit or quality improvement
- Knowledge of clinical governance
- At least 2 years postgraduate experience
- Experience in adult and paediatric ophthalmology clinics
- Experience of supervising orthoptic undergraduates
- BSc Hons Orthoptics
