Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Operator to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a key member of our highway maintenance crew, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our equipment and facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Equipment Operations: Operate a variety of heavy-duty equipment, including dump trucks, tractors, and loaders, to perform maintenance and construction-related work tasks.
  • Job Safety: Identify and mitigate workplace safety hazards, maintain a clean and orderly work environment, and adhere to VDOT safety regulations and practices.
  • Emergency Operations: Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal, clear roadways of debris, and provide traffic control during emergency situations.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and repairs on equipment, complete pre-trip inspections, and ensure all vehicles and equipment are in good working condition.
  • Manual Labor: Participate in manual labor tasks, such as cleaning and maintaining facilities, and assist with project completion as needed.
Requirements
  • Knowledge and Skills: Possess knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures, as well as the ability to operate and maintain equipment comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities.
  • Physical Demands: Be able to perform heavy manual labor, work in inclement weather, and be willing to work outside of normal hours, weekends, and holidays during emergency situations.
  • Education and Certifications: Possess a valid CDL with appropriate endorsements, and be willing to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience: Possess experience performing heavy manual labor, operating heavy-duty equipment, and performing basic preventative maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
  • Training and Certifications: Possess flagging certification and be familiar with methods and materials used in highway maintenance.
