The Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Full Stack Software Engineer to join our core team as the first software engineering hire. As a founding engineer, you'll take on a high degree of ownership, with a clear path to becoming a Technical Lead as we scale. This role offers excellent opportunities for career progression, either as an individual contributor or moving into engineering management as we expand.

You'll be responsible for implementing and delivering core product features end-to-end, making architectural and infrastructure decisions, aligning our technical roadmap with broader business goals, and maintaining code quality, testing frameworks, and deployment pipelines.

Collaboration and Personal Growth

  • Work closely with the CTO and Head of Engineering on long-term technical strategies.
  • Partner with customers to ensure alignment between technical capabilities and product needs.
  • Participate in product design and feature prioritization.
  • Mentor and onboard new hires, contributing to a knowledge-sharing culture.

Your First Year at Polaron

In your first year, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping our product and engineering practices:

  • Deliver an end-to-end product feature, gain a strong understanding of our codebase and infrastructure, and enhance internal practices like CI/CD and testing.
  • Lead a major product milestone, optimize code performance, and establish best practices for testing and documentation.
  • Develop scalable frameworks for future integrations, conduct a technical review of our architecture, and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a product-focused Full Stack Software Engineer.
  • A background working for a start-up or scale-up with experience of full lifecycle development, from design and testing, through to deployment, in a live production environment.
  • Experience in designing and scaling cloud-based software architectures.
  • Expertise in writing well-tested, maintainable code using statically typed languages.
  • Strong knowledge of TypeScript and React. Past experience in functional programming or languages such as Go and Rust is also beneficial.
  • A product-oriented mindset focused on delivery and taking ownership of code, comfortable defining, delivering, and iterating on features.
  • Full-stack proficiency, with a willingness to work across the technology stack.
  • Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code tools are all valuable.
  • An interest in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or Materials Science is highly advantageous.

  • CI/CD: GitHub, GitHub Actions.

Location and Compensation

This is primarily an in-person role as we build the product together. The team is based in East London (near Old Street and Hoxton Overground). We currently work on-site four days a week to foster collaboration, though we're open to discussing flexibility.

Remuneration Package

  • £85,000 - £95,000 per annum.
  • Equity of 0.2%-0.8%.
