Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mortuary Manager to join our team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality mortuary services to the Trust across four main hospital sites.

About the Role

The Deputy Mortuary Manager will play a key role in the Cellular Pathology management team, overseeing the dignified reception, care, and release of adult and baby deceased patients. This includes advising, supporting, and overseeing complex post-mortem examinations, sympathetic reconstructions, removing medical devices, and facilitating viewings of deceased patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage key documentation and audit trails
  • Update policies, procedures, and manage mortuary assets
  • Oversee the mortuary team in delivering care in the clinical area within Pathology
  • Ensure effective training, competency assessments, and communications with the team
  • Link with other key professionals, including Medical Examiner's Office, Bereavement and End of Life specialists, HM Coroner, Funeral Directors, and service engineers
Requirements
  • Education to GCSE (or equivalent) including English, mathematics, and a science (ideally biology)
  • RSPH Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Science, Anatomical Pathology Technology
  • Professional experience in managing a mortuary facility
  • Knowledge of safety, including infectious diseases and dangerous chemicals/gases
  • Knowledge of hospital and laboratory computer systems
  • Awareness of accreditation requirements and quality management systems
  • Ability to work alone or in a team
  • Able to manage workload and demand for urgent action
  • Able to work at night and alone
