Job Overview

The North Middlesex University Hospital is seeking a highly motivated and experienced physiotherapist to join our acute in-patient physiotherapy service. As a rotational physiotherapist, you will have the opportunity to develop both clinical and managerial skills in a variety of settings.

Main Duties

  • To perform highly specialist physiotherapy assessments and develop treatment & management programmes for patients with acute and chronic conditions.
  • To participate in the education and training of staff grade physiotherapists, technicians, assistants, students and other healthcare professionals.
  • To deputise for the team leader physiotherapist in their absence.
  • To participate in the 7-day service rota.
  • To participate in the emergency on call respiratory rota.
  • To complete rotations in Acute stroke, Admission avoidance, Critical Care/Respiratory, Medical, Oncology, Elderly Care, Orthopaedics & Paediatrics.
  • To supervise band 5's, therapy assistants and students.
  • To participate in the audit and research process quality improvement.
  • To work in an integrated manner with the Occupational Therapists to improve patient care.

The North Middlesex University Hospital is one of London's busiest healthcare providers, providing hospital care and community services for the 350,000 people living in Enfield, Haringey and beyond.

Our specialist services include HIV, cardiology, blood disorders, diabetes, fertility, sickle cell and thalassemia. In addition to a full range of cancer diagnosis and treatment services, the Helen Rollason Cancer Support Centre is based on-site and provides services to support cancer patients' wellbeing.

We also provide community services and have a dedicated 0-19 service for children and young people in Enfield so that they can get the best possible start in life. This includes health visitors and school nurses who are delivering the national Healthy Child Programme, which provides a structured framework for the delivery of key interventions to support the health and wellbeing of children and families from 0 to 5 and school aged children from 5-19.

Key Responsibilities

  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care.
  • To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management, and support more junior staff to do likewise.
  • To interpret and analyse complex clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses and prognoses in a wide range of complex conditions.
  • To recommend the best course of intervention, and to develop comprehensive discharge plans.

Education and Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Degree or Diploma in Physiotherapy.
  • Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council.
  • Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists.

Desirable Criteria

  • Member of a relevant Clinical Interest Group.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential Criteria

  • Completed the core rotations (ITU, acute medicine, older peoples acute care, neurology or acute stroke/surgery/orthopaedics) (undergraduate placements will not fulfil this criterion).
  • Fully competent to practice in intensive care.
  • Experience across a range of NHS sectors e.g. Primary, Secondary and Community Services.
  • Experience of writing and delivering in-service training programmes.
  • Experience of supervising non-qualified staff, including participation in personal development reviews.
  • Experience of discharge planning.
  • Experience of completing basic functional assessments.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of undertaking an improvement project.

  • Knowledge of current NHS initiatives.
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and its application to physiotherapy services.
  • Knowledge of physiotherapy professional issues.

  • Knowledge of pathologies and the current medical management of commonly occurring conditions for hospital based and community patients.
  • Knowledge of other medical conditions which you may encounter including, but not exclusively, respiratory, orthopaedic, neurological and mental health conditions.
  • Knowledge of outcome measure tools.
  • Knowledge of the audit cycle and its uses.
