Job Title: Principal Manufacturing Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Manufacturing Engineer to join our team at Leonardo in Edinburgh. As a key member of our manufacturing team, you will be responsible for leading industrialisation activities and achieving manufacturing maturity through the product design, development, and production lifecycles.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and implement manufacturing processes by studying product requirements, researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment.
  2. Prepare and organise Manufacturing Maturity Reviews, maintain governance through the Lifecycle Management process, and create/contribute/review and/or lead Manufacturing Plans.
  3. Provide manufacturing decision-making information with resolution proposals by reviewing production schedules, reviewing production labour and material costs, estimating future requirements, and preparing product and process reports.
  4. Resolve complex product and/or production issues and constraints on the shop floor, reacting efficiently to escalation from manufacturing teams.
  5. Improve manufacturing efficiency by capacity analysis, simulation planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
  6. Review manufacturing documentation, including input to process-specific risk assessments, COSHH data, technical reports, and specifications.
  7. Assure product and process quality by designing methods and confirming manufacturing processes.
  8. Contribute to failure investigations and know problem-solving techniques, such as 8D.
  9. Assure manufacturing data, including routings, production plans, control plans, and electronic work instructions.
  10. Identify continuous improvement activities to develop skills and competencies within Manufacturing Engineering.
  11. Complete improvement and development projects by training and interacting with the organisation's manufacturing engineer community.
  12. Promote a culture of best practice sharing and knowledge exploitation.
  13. Mentor, coach, and develop junior members of the team to develop overall capability.
  14. Provide domain experience in support of customer and user engagement and product road maps.
  15. Maintain product and company reputation by complying with government regulations.
Requirements:
  1. In-depth understanding of manufacturing processes and principles.
  2. People management and leadership skills, including effective performance and change management skills.
  3. Ability to influence and negotiate with others using data and analysis to support line of reasoning.
  4. Detailed understanding of the operational framework and business processes.
  5. Understanding of cross-functional/commercial business processes and their own impact.
  6. Ability to take ownership of a work package, planning and scheduling own workload and the work of others.
  7. Operational understanding of project work and how the work of the team impacts upon other project activities.
  8. Demonstrated knowledge and experience of multiple phases of the Product Life Cycle and the associated processes.
  9. Experience of peer reviewing the work of others inside a product team and within a sub-Engineering Unit and ensuring the resulting actions are implemented.
  10. Demonstrated knowledge of the risk/reward process associated with engineering activity informing the activities of a product team and own sub-engineering unit.
  11. Ability to communicate concepts in a non-technical way.
  12. Confidence and ability to challenge/respond to technical/process issues.
  13. Ability to interact effectively with customers and suppliers.
  14. Been involved in capability and/or process development, demonstrating an ability to implement a change to working practices.
