About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Speech and Language Therapist to join our team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. As a Speech and Language Therapist - Oncology and Head & Neck Cancer Specialist, you will be working with patients who have been diagnosed with head and neck cancer or oncological conditions.

You will be an integral part of our established oncology and head & neck cancer team, working within outpatient clinics, acute surgical and oncological wards, specialist ENT/SLT clinics, and surgical voice restoration based at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

As a Speech and Language Therapist, you will be responsible for assessing and managing patients with swallowing, communication, and voice disorders due to head and neck cancer at any stage of their treatment. You will work closely with the SLT Team Leaders, Peer Specialist Speech and Language Therapists, and NQP Speech and Language Therapists to provide an excellent level of care to our patient group.

The successful candidate will have a clear passion in assessing and managing swallowing and communication disorders within the oncology and head & neck cancer cohort. Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  1. Assessing and managing patients with swallowing, communication, and voice disorders due to head and neck cancer at any stage of their treatment
  2. Working towards utilising specialist assessments and modalities such as FEES, VFS, and SVR
  3. Working as an integral part of specialist MDT clinics including radiotherapy
  4. Service development and audit
  5. Training of junior colleagues and students
  6. Working flexibly and thriving in a fast-paced environment

We have a large team who share a caseload of diverse patient cohorts so being a team player is essential.

At present, we have a voluntary weekend service in some clinical areas.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • BSc or recognised MSc degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Membership of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)

Essential experience includes:

  • Experience of working within an adult inpatient setting
  • Experience of working independently with adult dysphagia caseload
