We are seeking an experienced clinician to join our team as a Senior Clinical Fellow in General Surgery. The successful candidate will work autonomously to a level of defined competencies, as agreed within local clinical governance frameworks.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide high-quality patient care and maintain professional knowledge and skills.
  2. Recognise and work within the limits of your competence.
  3. Provide specialist advice to patients regarding their illness.
  4. Participate in on-call rota for emergency general surgery.
  5. Undertake regular ward rounds and attend operating theatre and endoscopy sessions.
  6. Work with colleagues to provide effective clinical leadership for all staff in the service.
  7. Contribute to and participate in the development of the service.
  8. Involve in teaching and training, audit, and research.

The appointee will be based at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary but will be required to support the Trust's General Surgery workload wherever it is located. The appointee will work independently but will be supported by a consultant surgeon. The appointee shall be provided support for career progression and will be allocated a clinical supervisor.

On-Call:

Please note that senior positions may be expected to participate in an on-call rota if the role is predominantly operational.

Communications and Key Working Relationships:

The General Surgery & Urology Directorate forms part of the Surgical Division, which is led by the Divisional Medical Director and Divisional Director for Operations and Performance. All clinical directorates are under the leadership of the Medical Director.

The Surgical Operational Management team works closely with our team to ensure the smooth running of our services for the benefit of our patients.

Responsibility for Finance:

To ensure efficient use of resources at all times.

Responsibility for Human Resources:

To participate in Induction Programmes as required and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.

Responsibility for Health & Safety:

Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions.

Responsibility for Teaching:

The appointee will be expected to participate in the teaching of undergraduate staff and in the professional development of junior medical staff working in the Department.

Work Circumstances & On-Call:

There is a resident on-call element, including weekends. The current rota is a 1 in 12. One session per month at Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust is devoted to audit when all clinical services are suspended.
