About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Planning Officer to join our Development Management team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for leading a team of planners and validation officers, negotiating development outcomes, and managing a high-performing service.

Our Development Management team is responsible for ensuring that development in Lambeth is managed in a way that balances the needs of the community with the need for economic growth. We are a dynamic and forward-thinking team that is committed to delivering excellent services to our customers.

As a Principal Planning Officer, you will have the opportunity to work with a range of stakeholders, including developers, investors, and community groups.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of planners and validation officers to ensure that development applications are processed efficiently and effectively.
  • Negotiate development outcomes with developers and other stakeholders to ensure that they meet the needs of the community.
  • Manage a high-performing service that delivers excellent results and meets the needs of our customers.
  • Present applications to the Planning Applications Committee and ensure that reports and other documents are of a high standard.
  • Deputise for the Area Team Manager as required.
Requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of all relevant planning legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • An RTPI-recognised degree-level qualification in Town Planning or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience of development management work with responsibility for dealing with a planning application caseload that includes major and/or complex applications.
  • Experience of providing advice to Councillors, senior officers, developers, and the public on all aspects of planning applications and related matters.
  • Experience of providing supervision and/or guidance to more junior staff to ensure that applications are reported in line with target dates and in accordance with agreed procedures.
