Comprehensive Occupational Therapist

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is a leading Cancer Hospital in London, and the Occupational Therapy Department is recruiting to a full-time role in our Sutton hospital to work across adult wards, within all cancer groups.
Main ResponsibilitiesThe Band 5 Occupational Therapist provides a high-quality, cost-effective occupational therapy service for patients with cancer. They will organise occupational therapy activities within a defined clinical area and liaise closely with the multi-professional rehabilitation team in the provision of specialist input to various education programmes.
Key Role Responsibilities- Providing clinical caseload cover for other Occupational Therapy staff during periods of absence.
- Assisting in the collection and collation of data and publication of evidence through approved research and audit, e.g. publishing articles in recognised professional journals.
- Preparing and delivering workshops, teaching sessions, and lectures to other healthcare professionals and undergraduates on areas of expertise at the Royal Marsden School of Cancer Nursing and Rehabilitation, as well as external organisations.
- Participating in visitors programmes in association with the Department of Professional Development.
- Supervising undergraduate occupational therapy students in formal structured placements.
Education/Qualifications
Essential
- Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy recognised by the UK College of Occupational Therapists.
- State Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council for Occupational Therapy.
- Evidence of experience of dealing with oncology patients and their families/carers.
- Evidence of experience in clinical supervision and appraisal.
Essential
- Knowledge of functional assessment and treatment techniques for oncology and palliative care patients, including physical, cognitive, psychosocial functional assessments and treatment, as well as specific symptom and lifestyle management techniques.
- Risk assessment: Ability to carry out risk assessments concerning patients and staff safety, including Manual Handling.
- Ability to assess potential risks with regard to patients' discharge from hospital.
- Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills, required in an oncology and palliative care setting, including dealing with imparting bad news.
- Ability to produce professional reports and records, including POMRs, multi-professional care plans, letters, assessments for hospital and external agencies.
- Ability to teach patients and carers in areas relating to rehabilitation, preparing and delivering presentations and education sessions to healthcare colleagues and members of the public.
- Ability to assess risks associated with lone working, taking responsibility for reporting to colleagues and ensuring self and patient safety at all times.
- Ability to fulfil a supervisory role for undergraduate students.
- Ability to enter data, prepare reports, formal written documentation, and multi-media presentations.
