About the Role

Barrington James is seeking a highly skilled Photonics Design Engineer to join our team. As a Photonics Design Engineer, you will play a critical part in the design, layout, and optimization of photonic devices, ensuring that they meet the stringent requirements of modern fabrication processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Layout: Take ownership of the design and layout of photonic devices using state-of-the-art EDA tools, translating design specifications into precise, manufacturable layouts that meet performance and reliability criteria.
  • Process Expertise: Leverage your deep understanding of photonic and semiconductor fabrication processes to guide and inform the layout process, ensuring that layouts are optimized for manufacturability, yield, and performance, taking into account process variations and constraints.
  • Device Development: Create, import, and manage custom photonic devices within the EDA flow, defining device parameters, ensuring compatibility with existing design flows, and working closely with design teams to integrate these devices into larger systems.
  • EDA Tool Development: Lead the development, maintenance, and optimization of EDA tools and flows specific to photonic devices, defining best practices, automating processes where possible, and staying current with advancements in EDA technology to continually improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Collaboration and Documentation: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that layouts meet the overall design goals, and maintain comprehensive documentation of layout methodologies, design rules, and EDA tool configurations to support reproducibility and knowledge sharing within the team.
Requirements
  • EDA Tool Expertise: Strong knowledge in mixed-signal EDA tooling, with a strong preference for candidates who have experience with photonics-specific EDA tools.
  • Layout Precision: A proven ability to deliver precise and error-free layouts that meet all design and fabrication requirements.
  • Design and Verification: Proficiency in layout design, Design Rule Checking (DRC), and Layout Versus Schematic (LVS) flows, ensuring that designs are compliant with fabrication constraints and are correctly implemented.
  • Simulation and Capture: Familiarity with Verilog for simulation purposes and schematic design capture, enabling seamless integration of photonic devices with electronic systems.
  • Custom Layouts and GDSII: Experience in creating custom layouts and working with GDSII formats, ensuring that layouts are correctly exported and ready for fabrication.
  • Process Understanding: A strong understanding of silicon fabrication processes is required, with additional experience in photonic-specific processes being highly advantageous.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex design and layout challenges, using both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
