Forensic Voice Analyst Researcher

Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

Project Overview

Researching the phonetic underpinnings of speaker attribution is crucial for legal contexts, including speaker attribution by police staff transcribers, expert transcribers, and/or using automatic software. This project offers the opportunity to investigate the process of assigning each utterance in a transcript to a speaker, considering the implications of poor recording quality and the risk of misattributing utterances.

Funding and Application Process

The DTP studentships provide an annual maintenance grant to cover living costs and university tuition fees at home fee level. The fee gap between the home and overseas fee rates will be covered by the University through internal co-funding for international candidates. All applications will be made through the University Postgraduate Application Portal.

Research Requirements

Candidates should propose a project that investigates one or more aspects of speaker attribution experimentally. The successful applicant will work on a collaborative project co-led by Dr Kirsty McDougall and Dr Richard Rhodes, with a focus on transcribing evidential recordings and improving speaker attribution accuracy.
