Housing Officer Job Description

Our client, a forward-thinking District Council, is seeking a skilled Housing Officer to join their team on a 5-month fixed-term contract. The successful candidate will work in East Devon, providing a customer-focused housing options and advice service to prevent and relieve homelessness.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Deliver a comprehensive and innovative housing options and advice service, prioritizing early intervention and homelessness prevention in line with the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
  2. Participate in the housing options duty service, providing initial advice to customers face-to-face or over the phone, and dealing with incoming calls, emails, and letters.
  3. Conduct housing needs assessments for applicants who are homeless or threatened with homelessness, in accordance with the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
  4. Negotiate and mediate with landlords and other relevant parties to prevent homelessness by keeping customers in their properties or securing suitable alternative accommodation.
  5. Investigate applications in line with the Housing Act 1996 Part 7 and relevant case law.
  6. Develop and update effective Personalised Housing Plans to ensure successful homelessness prevention or relief.
  7. Identify suitable emergency and temporary accommodation for homeless priority need households.
  8. Promote and utilize the Council's Rent Deposit Scheme to secure private rented accommodation and prevent or relieve homelessness.
  9. Participate in a reactive 'out of hours' service to deal with urgent homeless cases.
